THE WATERGATE | LUXURY CO-OPS | FOGGY BOTTOM | WASHINGTON
Located at 700 New Hampshire Avenue, Washington, DC 20037
The intrepid Watergate is a Washington, DC landmark and an enduring example of luxury living in the nation’s capital. With its lofty perch above the banks of the Potomac River, the 10-acre mid-century complex broke ground in 1962 and was completed by 1971. The sprawling waterfront compound in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood was the first major mixed-use development in the District, and included cooperative residences for sale, office buildings, a famed hotel, an underground shopping mall, street-level fashion boutiques, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts and more. Today, it’s still one of the most in-demand places to live in the region.

Learn More About The Watergate
Designed by Italian architect Luigi Moretti, the six concrete buildings are instantly recognizable with their curvilinear space-age shapes. The modernist complex also benefitted by memorable landscaping from Boris Timchenko, with flowering gardens, strolling paths, fountains and opulent lawns. The political scandal of the early 1970s forever defined the Watergate to the outside world. But in Washington, it simply remains a premiere, full-service place to live.
Coops for sale at the Watergate’s three residential buildings are known for their spacious floorplans, with sizes stretching up to 4,000 square feet. Over the years, there have also been numerous instances of side-by-side units being converted into supersized residences. The original interiors have often received updates, and in fact, some of the apartments have been given stunning makeovers from leading architects and interior designers. This often involves structural changes such as opening up walls, as well as wholesale kitchen and bath remodels. The signature private balconies remain the same, however, resplendent in their inverse sweeping curves. Many offer superb views of the Potomac River below.
Apartments for sale at the Watergate have varied widely in price in recent years, from the mid-six figures to over $4 million. Residents certainly get a lot when it comes to amenities. The white-gloves treatment is on full display with elegant lobbies, staffed desks, 24-hour concierge service, doormen, secure parking, both freshwater and saltwater swimming pools, fitness centers and tennis courts. There’s also the on-site shops and businesses, including a post office. One of the longest remaining businesses is the ever popular Watergate Pastry, providing over 100 varieties of delectable treats. Newcomers include the aptly named The Next Whiskey Bar at the revamped Watergate Hotel, with illuminated walls of whiskey bottles, aping the curved shape of the complex itself.
The Watergate FAQ’s
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: When was the Watergate complex built and who designed it?
A: The Watergate was designed by Italian architect Luigi Moretti. The sprawling 10-acre complex consists of numerous buildings including offices, a hotel, retail outlets, and three residential buildings. The ambitious project took nearly a decade to build between 1962 and 1971, but the three cooperative buildings were completed by 1968.
Q: Does the Watergate Pastry shop still exist?
A: Yes, it does. Watergate Pastry is considered one of Washington, DC’s most enduring businesses, having opened its doors in 1966. The venerable bakery is well known for its French pastries and specialty wedding cakes.
Q: Would Watergate be classified as modern architecture?
A: Today, many architectural enthusiasts refer to the curvilinear exteriors as well as the original interiors as mid-century modern. However, that is a more recent terminology. Moretti himself described his style as “parametric architecture.” Regardless, there is no doubt that the project which was described by its developers as a “city within a city” displays many modernist elements, including the landscaping.
Q: Is it common to find redesigned apartments at the Watergate?
A: Given the age of the complex, the Watergate’s luxury cooperative apartments are frequent recipients of extensive renovations and makeovers. The spacious floorplans, huge existing windows, and large balconies give architects and interior designers lots to work with.
Foggy Bottom in Washington, DC
The neighborhood was originally known as Funktown in the 1700s, after German immigrant and land developer Jacob Funk. By the following century, the combination of natural fog mixed with industrial smoke from glass works, beer breweries and the Washington Gas and Light Company, inspired a new and lasting name—Foggy Bottom. Since the 1940s, Foggy Bottom has been home to the State Department, as well as other federal offices. Also in the neighborhood is the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the campus of George Washington University.
The surrounding areas are an added bonus, with Georgetown to the northwest, the West End to the north, Downtown to the northeast, the White House to the east and the National Mall to the south. The Potomac River, of course, is directly to the west. A walking and biking trail leads south to Georgetown Waterfront Park, a boathouse with rentals, Washington Harbor and riverfront cafes. Or, stroll north through the cherry blossoms to the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument. The neighborhood is served by the Foggy Bottom/GWU Metro Station. It’s all part of an impressive package at the Watergate.
