The name Watermark, according to the developer IDI Group, refers to the high-water mark of the Potomac River back in 1749. That spot is believed to be at the building’s site, with the water line now embossed in stone along the pedestrian walkway. Later in the same century, the waterfront parcel was extended outward by filling the seafloor with dirt and stone, thus allowing for docks to be built that would accommodate large sailing vessels. The site soon became home to warehouses, merchants and ship suppliers.
The area would see many more changes in the coming years, including occupation by the British during the War of 1812, and later, by the Union Army during the Civil War. In 1897, a massive fire gutted the block bounded by Strand, Duke, Union and Prince Streets. The DeWilton Aitescheson Coal and Wood Yard was subsequently rebuilt at the Strand Street location, remaining in business until 1978. Today, Watermark stands as a riverfront boutique condominium, with facades that reflect the City of Alexandria's historic architecture and interior living spaces that bespeak modern luxury.
The spacious floorplans offer 2,675 to 2,900 square feet of living space, with lots of light from huge windows, and unobstructed views of the Potomac River. The grand single-story apartments for sale have three bedrooms and three full baths, offered in varying layouts. Five-inch wide-plank hardwood floors have a streaky vintage look, while chef-style open kitchens boast Italian Cucina Craft cabinets, quartz counters and islands, and panelized premium stainless steel appliances. Tasteful pendant lights hang over the prep/dining counters. Marble fireplaces, stylish dining rooms, private outdoor spaces and exquisitely designed marble spa-style baths with deep soaking tubs and frameless showers, add further to the appeal.
Residents at this exclusive 18-unit building enjoy a chic rooftop terrace and lounging area with a fire feature and spectacular views of the river and Old Town. There is an elegant lobby, private storage, a bike room and optional reserved parking. Additionally, one of the two street level retail spaces will be Salon Monte—the flagship location of actor, producer and fashion icon Monte Durham. Pedestrian pathways connect S. Union and Strand Streets.
