More About Fairfax County, Virginia
While the independent city of Alexandria is not part of Fairfax County, the greater Alexandria area is. As confusing as that may seem, it does mean that multiple popular residential communities associated with Alexandria are indeed part of our Fairfax County topic of discussion. These include affluent coastal neighborhoods such as Belle Haven, Fort Hunt, and Mount Vernon, the latter including the historic home and plantation of George Washington. Heading inland while still in the Alexandria area, you’ll find key bedroom suburbs such as Kingstowne, Franconia, and Springfield.
There are a number of prominent mid-century modern neighborhoods in Fairfax County including Wessynton on the Potomac River in Alexandria’s Mount Vernon area, and Hollin Hills with approximately 450 iconic modernist homes, primarily designed by noted architect Charles Goodman. Other mid-century modern neighborhoods in Fairfax County include Lake Barcroft, Pine Spring, Truro, and Hickory Cluster in the Reston area. Reston itself is one of the most innovative and enduring works of residential development in the country, a city designed in the “New Town” movement, with five separate self-sustaining villages, each with its own architectural influences, with a large lake as the centerpiece.
The northern part of Fairfax County is home to a number of highly desirable neighborhoods, as well as a spate of recent residential and commercial developments. Dunn Loring is located alongside the Capital Beltway and mixes historic charm with newer luxury homes for sale. A few miles north is Vienna, a very affluent community with large and gracious properties. Vienna is also the home of the famous Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts.
One of Washington Metro’s most exclusive places to live is McLean, abutting the Potomac River and south of another upscale community, Great Falls. McLean has been pushing west in recent years, connecting with its next-door neighbor Tysons (formerly Tysons Corner). This border area near the convergence of the Capital Beltway and Dulles Access Road, is home to some impressive new construction luxury condo towers like Monarch, and Verse.
