The Alexandra | Luxury Condos | Dupont Circle
Located at 2101 N Street NW, Washington, DC 20037
The Alexandra is a historic former apartment building that was later renovated and converted to condominiums. Nicely located in Washington, DC’s desirable Dupont Circle neighborhood, the four story building is a good example of how luxury living can’t always be defined by modern bells and whistles, or full service amenities. Instead, the landmark building offers timeless style and grace in a neighborhood that is celebrated for its charming antique rowhouses and other notable structures.
Originally built in 1900, the Alexandra was designed by Albert H. Beers in the Beaux-Arts style with classic front bays, a flat roofline with ornate cornice detailing, and pediments above the windows. There are 31 residential units across the four levels, most of which are one-bedrooms. Sizes can range from about 382 to 837 square feet of living space, with some of the larger residences also having dens and powder rooms. Other notable historic apartment buildings in the area that have been turned into condos or co-ops include General Scott, the Roydon, and the Presidential.

Classic Style at the Alexandra
The Alexandra was built as a well-regarded, turn of the century apartment building for those who didn’t want the responsibility or cost of owning and maintaining their own property. During its early heyday, the building with its distinctive ornamentation and elevated front entrance was popular with government employees and other working professionals who appreciated the close proximity to downtown office buildings. The eventual conversion to condos left many of the lovely old details either intact, or nicely restored. Common features include beautiful hardwood floors, tall windows with deep sills, built-in bookcases, overhead lighting, and delightful alcoves that can work nicely as desk spaces.
The boutique building with its 31 condo apartments was substantially renovated in the late 1980s, but individual owners have often added their own makeovers since that time. Some units have been opened up for an airier appeal, and you’ll often find recently remodeled gourmet kitchens and luxurious baths. In-unit washers and dryers are commonplace, and some of these treasures even have wood-burning fireplaces! The Alexandra was built before automobiles were common and as a result, there is no parking garage. However, there is a bike room, and basement storage lockers, and there are even a limited number of off-street parking spaces. Additionally, the Dupont Circle Metro Station is only about four blocks away.
The Dupont Circle Experience
Dupont Circle is one of Washington, DC’s most cherished residential neighborhoods, named after its traffic roundabout with a park in the center which in turn was named for Rear Admiral Francis Du Pont. Most of Dupont Circle is now a historic district, a fact that has helped limit wholesale new construction. And while the neighborhood is most closely associated with colorful rowhouses and a sprinkling of remaining grand mansions, there are also a significant number of condominiums. Many of these are akin to the Alexandra, in that they are historic former apartment buildings. However, there are also a fair number of contemporary structures that were built before the neighborhood achieve historic status in the 1970s, with further safeguards since that time.
Known for its diversity, cultural attractions, and community spirt, Dupont Circle is also home to some of the top restaurants in the city. Residents at the Alexandra are close to Mercy Me, Teddy and the Bully Bar, Firefly, Ala, and others. This is the western part of Dupont Circle, close to the West End neighborhood and Rock Creek Park.
