Boston House | Luxury Condos | Dupont Circle
Located at 1711 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20036
If judged solely by its name, readers might assume that Boston House is an old historic building. As it turns out, the building’s history points squarely toward the mid-century modern period. Built in 1950, the eight-story condominium with 270 residences represented a move away from Washington, DC’s more traditional forms of architecture, and instead offers cubist shapes wrapped in bands of windows. Once you add the round front driveway and a jutting overhang that appears to be suspended in air, you’ve got one of the most interesting residential addresses in Dupont Circle.
Located at 1711 Massachusetts Avenue between 17th and 18th Streets, Boston House is right in the heart of one of DC’s most popular neighborhoods and conveniently close to numerous top restaurants, a Whole Foods Market, and much more. This is one of the larger condominiums in the area, with residences primarily in studio and one-bedroom layouts. There are also some cases in which buyers have purchased adjacent units in order to combine them into larger floorplans. While Dupont Circle is best known for its colorful rowhouses, there are also a number of multifamily buildings such as Dupont West, 1755 N, and Church Place to name a few.

Boston House, a Mid-Century Modern Outlier
The Boston House was built during the early period of post-modernist design that would gain greater attraction in the latter part of the decade and throughout the 1960s. This interesting trend that was later labeled as the mid-century modern movement was more prevalent in single family homes. Nonetheless, there are a number of intriguing outliers in the Washington, DC area, with condominiums, cooperatives, and rental apartments designed by forward thinking architects of the day. Prime examples include River Park in the Southwest Waterfront, and Watergate in Foggy Bottom.
The buff brick and glass complex in Dupont Circle can fly a bit under the radar when it comes to conversations about modernism in Washington. But residents of the nearly block-long condo community are well aware of its architectural significance. The building melds earlier Beaux-Arts and Art Deco influences evidenced by the rounded corner at Massachusetts Ave and 17th Street, with the clerestory windows and distinctive modern linearism along the front of the building. The interior is just as striking, with a front lobby designed in the Googie tradition (think Mad Men meets the Jetsons).
The condo units themselves also reflect the modernist influences with open living and dining areas, and wide bands of windows separated by strips of metal trim. The original parquet wood floors are emblematic of the mid-century period, as are the galley kitchens. Given the fact that Boston House was built over 70 years ago, you’ll often find improvements and remodels from the various owners. Kitchens and baths are the most commonly renovated spaces. But residents tend to be quite cognizant of the building’s architectural style, often paying homage to interior designs that combine today’s luxury lifestyle finishes with fun retro elements from kidney-shaped coffee tables to 50s and 60s-style lighting. In addition to the 24-hour staffed lobby, there’s laundry facilities, secure package delivery, and a terrific roof deck a pergola, gas grills, lounge furniture, and stellar views.
