The Fort Totten neighborhood is named for the Civil War-era Union fort of the same name. Today, the remnants and earthwork remain as part of a National Park attraction. Additionally, a large Gothic Revival mansion built in 1847 in the Petworth/Fort Totten later served as President Lincoln’s summer home. The Lincoln “Cottage” is still in existence on the grounds of the Soldiers’ Home.
