Southwest Neighborhood Information
The Southwest, also known as the Southwest Waterfront, has a long history indeed. The historic Wheat Row townhouses are among the oldest surviving structures in DC, dating back to 1794.
During the 1950s, the city razed large portions of the neighborhood. Redevelopment included Harbor Square, a 440-unit cooperative mid-century modern community from noted architect Cholethiel Woodard Smith, as well as the River Park Mutual Homes co-ops with their metallic barrel roofs from Charles Goodman (also known for the Hollin Hills community in Alexandria).
The Latest in the Southwest Area
The newest and biggest development in the Southwest Waterfront is The Wharf, a mile-long $2 billion project with 150 new boat slips, a riverfront promenade, floating retail and entertainment, and luxury condominiums and hotels perched along the waterfront.
The Hoffman-Madison redevelopment is already open for business, featuring new waterfront condo buildings like VIO and 525 Water. But The Wharf isn’t yet complete—it will continue to expand over coming years.
From antique row houses to trailblazing mid-century designs, and from venerable institutions like the Maine Street Fish Market (open since 1805) to brand-new bars, restaurants and condos for sale, the Southwest Waterfront continues to evolve.
