The Wharf is Washington, DC’s most exciting new destination for luxury condo shoppers. The long-planned project is one of the most ambitious undertakings in Washington’s long history and was guided by developers Hoffman-Madison. The bids and planning phases for the massive overhaul of the existing land within the Southwest Waterfront area began in 2003, with groundbreaking commencing in 2014. The work was overseen by the architectural firm of Perkins Eastman, with other individual designers taking charge of specific buildings and attractions. The Wharf was constructed in two phases and ultimately completed in 2022 to the tune of $3.6 billion.

A New Waterfront Neighborhood

While the Wharf has been heralded as a new waterfront neighborhood, it actually has deep historic roots that predate the forming of the federal city itself. The land was originally inhabited by Native Americans and was subsequently part of the original mapping and planning for Washington, DC. The old docks and piers were home to fisherman, shipbuilders, and local merchants. The Maine Avenue Fish Market first opened in 1805, selling fish directly off boats. The oldest continually operating fish market in the nation is still flourishing today and has been preserved and reenergized as an integral part of the Wharf. The storied redevelopment of the Southwest Waterfront’s coastline was named District Wharf before shortening the moniker to the more succinct Wharf.

At present, there are three condominium communities at the Wharf, each with its own unique design, appeal, and amenities. VIO is perched at the northern end of the promenade, with Amaris and 525 Water at the southern end. Each building is a stone’s throw from the water, and right in the thick of all the excitement and attractions. VIO overlooks the boat slips and offers striking modernist interiors along with an infinity edge saltwater pool, a resident lounge, a yoga studio and gym, concierge and porter services, and much more. Amaris with its incredible twisting glass exterior from architect Rafael Vinoly also has a fitness enter, saltwater pool, plus a private park, concierge, porters and valets, and the District’s first car elevator.
