Tiber Island Condos For Sale
N St SW, M St SW, 4th St SW, 6th St SW
Tiber Island is not the typical Washington, DC condominium complex. Instead, it is a community of four high-rise towers and 21 townhouses in the rapidly changing Southwest Waterfront. Built back in 1966, Tiber Island was part of an interesting era in the District’s history, stemming from a transitional period that saw a number of similar large developments spring to life.

Additional Info About Tiber Island Condominium Residences
Designed by the notable DC architectural firm of Keyes, Lethbridge and Condon, Tiber Island was built around very large plaza with a fountain and underground parking. At the time of its delivery, the mid-century modern development won a first honors award from the American Institute of Architects. Constructed across the road from the glittering Potomac River, Tiber Island was part of a massive redevelopment movement spurred by the federal government that began in the late 1950s. And now, all these years later, the waterfront is again in the midst of considerable change.
Back in the day, prominent politicians like Vice-President Hubert Humphrey and House Speaker Tom Foley lived here. And, there is a connection to even more distant political history—the Thomas Law House, a 1784 Federalist mansion that once belonged to George and Martha Washington’s daughter, is still standing and is now available for weddings and other social events. The structures on Tiber Island can be found at N, M, 4th and 6th Streets SW.
All told, there are 389 residential units at Tiber Island, allowing for a wide variety of condos for sale. The towers offer floorplans ranging from studios to three-bedroom residences, while the townhouses are large and comfortable homes with private patios and balconies. Strictly speaking, it is the townhouses along with an additional 43 apartment-style flats that comprise the actual condos for sale. The rest of the tower units are classified as cooperatives, but they can be bought at sold as well.
Also worth noting is the two-story clubhouse, a swimming pool and numerous fitness rooms. And then there’s the larger surrounding neighborhood, including a new and ongoing redevelopment known as “The Wharf” which will encompass 27 acres of land and 50 acres of water. Built around the historical Maine Avenue Fish Market, the new community will include three new piers reaching out into the Washington Channel, plus shops, restaurants, entertainment and luxury condos for sale.
The Southwest Waterfront continues to change from its early shantytown origins, and Tiber Island remains as one of the many steps along the way, and still offering some great townhouses and condos for sale.
