Additional Information about the Area

Foggy Bottom is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the Washington area, settled around 1765 by Germans and once known as Funkstown after Jacob Funk. The community was home to breweries and other industries at the time. The name Foggy Bottom refers to a combination of industrial smoke and fog off the river in the early days.

During the modern era, Foggy Bottom became synonymous with the State Department. The Watergate Hotel gained infamy as the site of the Democratic Convention Headquarters break-in, ultimately leading to the resignation of President Richard Nixon.
