U Street Corridor Neighborhood Information
The U Street Corridor owes much of its early development boom to the arrival of streetcars in the late 1800s. African American culture and an accompanying arts and music scene further influenced the neighborhood’s growth. Jazz greats like Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong were regular performers along the strip known as “Black Broadway.”
These days, the neighborhood is once again alive and bursting with energy, with restored theaters and nightclubs, plus more bars and restaurants than one can easily count. Entertainment venues include the U Street Music Hall, DC9 and Lincoln Theatre. Among the countless bars and restaurants is the landmark Ben’s Chili Bowl, offering casual grub since 1958. Residents are also served by the U Street Metro.
