The History of Shaw
Residential development here dates back to around 1800 and you can still find old Federal-style buildings from the early 19th century. Construction continued throughout the century, evidenced by a rich tapestry of row houses and other historic structures, with architectural styles including Victorian, Beaux Arts, Gothic and more.
Named for Colonel Robert Gould Shaw—son of Boston Brahmin abolitionists and also a Union officer who commanded an all-black regiment—the neighborhood later became a hub of African-American culture. Duke Ellington, Pearl Bailey and Cab Calloway were among the greats who regularly performed at a string of venues along U Street known as Black Broadway.
As with many other DC neighborhoods, Shaw went through a period of decline in the 1970s and 1980s. But it is now one of the city’s top real estate territories with revitalization boosted by a resurgent arts and entertainment movement.

Things to do in Shaw
If you’re shopping for a condo in Shaw, the chances are that part of the attraction is the amazing nightlife. It’s almost unfair to start listing bars and restaurants since the majority will be left out. Just a sampling includes The Bird, Dabney, Convivial, 1905, Hazel, Kyirisan, and Marvin with its excellent roof deck.
Then there’s music and other live entertainment at the U Street Music Hall, Lincoln Theatre, DC9 Nightclub, 9:30 Club and other venues. And any list of neighborhood attractions would certainly include the landmark Ben’s Chili Bowl, in business since 1958 and still open during the bleak days when nothing else was.
Local Metro rail stops include Shaw-Howard University and the U Street Station. To learn more about condos for sale in Shaw, call District Partners Real Estate, LLC, at 202-798-3600.
