The Balfour Condos For Sale

2000 16th Street NW, Washington DC 20009

When it comes to elegant Washington, DC addresses, The Balfour is one of the most prominent. One of the District’s most notable early apartment buildings, this impressive six-story Beaux-Arts structure was converted to condos for sale in the 1980s, with subsequent updates. It is located at 2000 16th Street NW in the District’s 20009 zip code.

Designed by notable architect George S. Cooper, The Balfour was delivered in 1900 and first known as the Westover, before being renamed after Arthur James Balfour who served as British Prime Minister from 1902-1905, and was also the First Earl of Balfour. The ornate facade includes a flat roof, octagonal front bays rising to the fifth floor and stopping at the stringcourse, a giant arched entrance framed by pillars, and a grand lobby replete with a marble staircase balustrade and five-foot marble wainscoting.

Additional Info About Condos For Sale at The Balfour in DC

With a construction cost of $100,000 in 1900, this building was one of DC’s most exclusive at the time. Originally, there were four large five-room apartments on each floor along with two smaller units, typically intended as in-law or servant quarters. The larger residences had five rooms, including libraries and parlors. After being sold for redevelopment in 1980, the structure was gutted except for the lobby. But the recession and subsequent bank repossession delayed the renovations for five more years.

There are now 53 one and two-bedroom residences at The Balfour, with condos for sale typically listing in a wide range, from the mid-$300s to the higher six figures. The reason is due to various states of upgrading since the original rehab in the 1980s. But common amenities usually include hardwood floors and upgraded kitchens, along with fireplaces in many of the units, and unique deep-set windows, many of which are arched.

Although some consider The Balfour to be in Dupont Circle’s northern sector, it is actually just north of U Street, making it apart of the U Street Corridor. It is also immediately south of both Adams Morgan and Columbia Heights. But this just means more great places to walk to—such as the fantastic Meridian Hill Park, and all the great shops, bars and restaurants that are clustered along U Street and 14th Street. From its prime location to its amazing architecture, The Balfour is an address worth checking out.
