The History of Adams Morgan
This is a community that was a melting pot for immigrants during the 19th and early 20th centuries. In the 1950s, the all-black Thomas P. Morgan Elementary School and the all-white John Quincy Adams Elementary School were desegregated, inspiring a redrawing of neighborhood boundaries and the naming of the Adams Morgan community.
Long regarded as a progressive neighborhood, Adams Morgan became one of DC’s leading scenes for nightlife in the 1980s and 1990s. That segued into an extended revitalization push for home buyers.
More About the Neighborhood
You’ll find all kinds of architectural styles in Adams Morgan, including Federal, Victorian, Beaux Arts, Mediterranean/Italianate, Art Deco, Mid-Century Modern and new Modernism. As for housing types, there’s townhouses, flats, lofts, penthouses and even a few grand single-family residences left over from yesteryear.
And then there’s all the arts, culture, boutique retail and the 18th Street Corridor with amazing restaurants representing cuisines from around the globe. From the farmers market to indie art galleries, and from live music to quiet hideaways, Adams Morgan is still one of DC’s premiere destination places.
