Adams Morgan Real Estate, Washington DC

Over the past several years, real estate for sale in Adams Morgan became such a hot item in the Washington DC marketplace that the inventory nearly became extinct. Real estate agents, commercial developers and community leaders have been attempting to replenish the dwindling stock by planting pieces of discarded brick in the few vacant lots that are left and watering daily. In a few isolated instances, new modern glass and steel towers have poked their angular heads above ground, searching for the sun’s nourishing rays.

Located in the District’s northwest sector, the neighborhood is best known for an abundance of brightly colored antique row houses as well as grand old Art Deco apartment buildings that have converted to condos for sale in Washington DC. You’ll also find more modern structures as referenced above—now fully formed and offering uber-hip lofts and flats perched over ground floor retail.

Adams Morgan Neighborhood Information

Adams Morgan is also celebrated for its fantastic restaurants and night spots, as well as upscale retail, art galleries and other super-hip settings. It wasn’t always that way, of course. Historically known as a melting pots for immigrants, the neighborhood fell into urban blight during the 1970s. Change was ushered in over the following decades as a wave of hot DC nightclubs paved the way for residential gentrification.

Adams Morgan FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How did Adams Morgan get its name?

A: The name is a nod to cultural diversity. Originally known as Lanier Heights, the neighborhood was renamed in the late 1950s in honor of two newly desegregated schools, John Quincy Adams which had been attended by whites and Thomas P. Morgan which had been black attended.

Q: What makes Adams Morgan so popular?

A: Following a period of decline, Adams Morgan found new life with a vibrant nightclub and restaurant scene in the 1970s. Thus began an extended renaissance as new owners began buying affordable properties and fixing them up.

Q: What types of homes are in Adams Morgan?

A: The neighborhood is well known for its colorful row houses and redeveloped historic buildings. These days you’ll find more contemporary styles as well, from new luxury condos to hipster lofts.

Q: How close is Adams Morgan to downtown DC?

A: It is about a mile and a half away. Head south on Columbia Road, turn left on Connecticut Avenue, and you’ll be there soon.

More About the Real Estate Market in Adams Morgan - Washington DC

While the inventory has become depleted, there are still opportunities to be had with Adams Morgan homes for sale starting in the low-six figures for small studio units and climbing well into seven-figure territory. The neighborhood is still diverse, although certainly skewing more toward those who afford the generally high prices. You’ll still find a cultural mix including artists, shop owners and business professionals. And for families with kids, there’s great schools and some appealing places to run and play—such as the Walter Pierce Park with its delightful playground.

In short, Adams Morgan is still one of DC’s most popular destinations for homes buyers, although there’s no longer the same frenzied craze to snap up row houses as in years past. The name still carries weight, however—a neighborhood with a rich history that led the charge for urban revitalization during a time when the District held considerably less allure than it does today.
