The Evolving History of the West End
This is one of the older parts of DC, and you can still find some antique structures including grand old apartment buildings that have been restored and converted to condominiums. But it is also a community that has seen a dramatic transition during the modern era. In 1972, the Office of Planning and Management set into motion the idea of creating “a new in-town community.” This meant razing numerous existing structures, including a number of historic row houses.
A Snapshot of the Real Estate Market Today
Today, you’ll find an intriguing blend of form and function when it comes to housing. Columbia Residences, originally a Civil War era hospital for women, has now been transformed into high end condo residences. The West End Library has been redeveloped with books on the lower floors and condominiums on top!
There’s also the 1970s International-style buildings that came out of the reshaping of the neighborhood, and the newest trend toward highly contemporary designs, such as 2501 M with its glass and steel cubism.
Real estate prices have a fairly wide range in the West End, starting with studios and one-bedroom units in the low-to-mid six figures and soaring well into the millions for palatial penthouses with views of the nearby Potomac River.
Amenities in the West End
There’s plenty of amenities and conveniences in the West End. You can stock your stainless steel Sub-Zero fridge with good eats from the nearby Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. Movie buffs can catch a flick at the West End Independent Art House Cinema, and there’s plenty of bars and restaurants as well.
Residents can also head next-door to Georgetown with its waterfront shops and cafes, or to any number of Downtown DC attractions. For more information about this upscale urban community, call District Partners at Compass, (202) 400-3070.
