More about Properties for Sale near Waterfront Green Line
Some of the oldest properties in the District can be found in the Southwest Waterfront. The Wheat Row townhouses were built in 1794 and eventually became part of a 1960s redevelopment known as Harbour Square. Designed by Chloethiel Woodard Smith, the iconic mid-century modern project combined condominiums, townhouses and cooperatives, as well as the pre-existing historic row houses.
This is also a neighborhood where you’ll find brand-new luxury condos for sale, including the 12-story VIO and the five-story 525 Water. Both of these stylish buildings are perched along the water’s edge, providing spectacular views of the Potomac River and the Channel.
Additional Information about the Area
This was once a shantytown where fisherman lived and worked alongside elite members of society. Federal-style row houses and assorted shacks were mixed with grand mansions of the day. The Maine Avenue Fish Market opened in 1805 and was part of the original wharf.
Most of the earliest buildings were torn down during the late 1950s, replaced by contemporary structures. The Wharf is the latest reimagining of the community, with new piers, shops, restaurants, condos and more. The old fish market is still in operation, although relocated from the original wharf to new floating barges.
