Washington’s original Chinatown was home to Chinse immigrants as early as the 1880s. But in 1929, the government removed residents in order to redevelop the area as the newly created Federal Triangle. At that point, Chinese residents formed a new neighborhood a few blocks north, between 5th and 8th Streets.

Today, this small community with its giant Friendship Arch is home to numerous restaurants, shops and cultural attractions. Among landmark structures is the Old Patent Office Building which houses two Smithsonian museums including the National Portrait Gallery as well as the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
