Potomac West, VA Homes For Sale
Potomac West in Alexandria City is a long sliver of land that encompasses several subdivisions: Arlandria, Warwick Village, Lynhaven, Hume and Del Ray. The old neighborhood of St. Elmo—more of a historic footnote than an active community these days—also shows up on some maps.
The Potomac Yard opened in 1906, one of nation’s busiest switching yards for trains. Soon after, the area bordering the Yard to the west was christened Potomac West. The preexisting communities of St. Elmo and Del Ray were merged and renamed the Town of Potomac. But in 1930 the town was annexed by the City of Alexandria. And slowly but surely, Del Ray became the more predominant community with St. Elmo and the Town of Potomac taking on more ceremonial roles.

These days, Potomac West is usually considered something of a general description for Del Ray and other nearby neighborhoods. Del Ray with its wonderful Craftsman homes as well as its eclectic indie restaurants and businesses along Mount Vernon Avenue, represents one of Alexandria’s hottest real estate marketplaces. But it’s not the only home-buying game in the area.
Lynhaven was developed as a place where Yard workers could afford home ownership—mortgage rates on the row house style properties were offered at $31.65 per month! Warwick Village is also dominated by 1940s-era brick Colonial Revival townhouses, while Arlandria is the northernmost neighborhood of this bunch and is known for its fun international-style restaurants and diversity of housing.
Put it all together and you’ll find that Potomac West offers one of the most diverse melting pots of real estate in all of Alexandria. That includes garden-style apartments that have gone condo, houses that combine Cape Cod and Rambler styles, Victorians and vintage Craftsman cottages, mid-century duplexes and more. Prices range from the low six figures to over a million bucks!
So whether you’re searching for competitive prices, fun parks, funky coffee shops and bars or an elusive long ago town named St. Elmo, Potomac West is a place that should be bookmarked on your Google map.
