Lynhaven, VA Homes For Sale

Tucked up into the northern portion of Alexandra City is a subdivision that is different from many others in the region. For the most part, Lynhaven was developed during the 1940s and 1950s as affordable housing for blue-collar workers. These days, those same residences have found a new popularity as condos and townhouses for sale. With quiet, tree-lined streets, Lynhaven has become an intriguing magnet for first-time buyers and others seeking competitive prices in the red-hot Alexandria marketplace.

This interesting community was the brainchild of J. Wesley Buchanan, a developer who sought to create opportunities tor home ownership for workers at Potomac Yard, once one of the busiest rail yards in the nation. Located just a couple blocks from the Yard on the other side of Route 1/Jefferson Davis Highway, the first 50 homes were delivered in 1941. Designed in a boxy row house style with generous front porches, the homes were advertised for sale at just $31.65 per month! The fledgling community was named for the developer’s daughter, Rosalyn “Lyn” Buchanan. By the end of 1944, about 300 of the homes had been built.

Construction took a hiatus for the next several years, resuming in the 1950s with low-rise Colonial Revival apartment buildings. Flash forward to the modern era as those same apartments and row houses became found new life as condos and townhouses for sale. More recently, there has been a new wave of upscale townhouse construction with a traditional Colonial style. To a lesser degree, you can also find some single-family house and duplexes.

Real estate values have been climbing in Lynhaven in recent years with flat-style condos starting around $300,000 and those original 1940s townhouses now listing in the solid mid-six figures. Newer townhomes are only slightly more expensive. Residents vary the commonality of the boxy row houses with colorful front gardens and landscaping, as well as different shades of paint and trim. This is a tight-knit community with an active local civic organization.

Fun indie shops and restaurants on Mount Vernon Avenue lie just to the west while the redeveloped Potomac Yard with its brand-name retailers and upscale townhomes is at Lynhaven’s eastern border. Plus, Del Ray and Old Town Alexandria are close by, offering tons more options for entertainment, dining and more.

Commuters can avail themselves of the nearby I-395, and the Potomac Yard Metro Station is due to open in 2020. Lynhaven is no longer that long-ago place where new home owners could pay their monthly mortgage for about what a bag of groceries costs these days. But there’s a new generation of buyers who are getting to enjoy home ownership, right across the street from the old “Pot Yard.” Contact District Partners at Compass to learn more about this intriguing community, (202) 798-3600.
