Petworth Real Estate, Washington DC
Petworth is a neighborhood with a lot of homes for sale. It’s also a neighborhood where a lot of properties have already been bought and sold over the past few years. The reason being is a combination of low prices, intriguing inventory and a cool neighborhood vibe that is different from more affluent suburbs to its north like Crestwood and 16th Street Heights, or more overtly trendy urban enclaves to the south such as Columbia Heights.
This neighborhood has seen its share of changes. It’s one of the oldest in Washington Metro, dating to homestead cabins in the mid-1700s. The arrival of street cars in 1890 prompted a residential boom lasting to the early 1940s. The modern era brought an increase in crime and plunging home values until a gradual revitalization trend commenced several years ago. Homes and condos for sale continue to show a double-digit rise in price.
Washington writer Dan Silverman began chronicling his neighborhood in 2006 through the popular Prince of Petworth blog, now known as Popville. In a recent Washington Post interview, Silverman described the evolution of Petworth real estate and all the newcomers, while maintaining that the diversity and sense of community is still present: “The good parts about the neighborhood have stayed the same, and that probably contributes to why it’s so hot right now.” To learn more about real estate for sale in Petworth or other Washington DC real estate opportunities, give District Partners at Compass a call today at (202) 798-3600!

There are also new developments coming to Petworth, such as The Swift—an old Safeway market that will now become a much fancier and bigger Safeway with 218 upscale living units up above. It is a form of progress but many longtime residents hope their neighborhood doesn’t become overly commercialized.
