North Old Town Alexandria, Homes For Sale
North Old Town Alexandria represents a rectangular portion of the city that is generally considered to be bordered by Slaters Lane to the north, the Potomac River to the east, Pendleton Street to the south and North Washington and George Washington Memorial Parkway to the west. Maps of the area typically show the communities of Potomac Yard and Del Ray as being just north and northeast of North Old Town, but there are many who would include them within the boundaries.
The northern section of Old Town was originally home to early tobacco plantations with the earliest port warehouse located near Oronoco Bay. By the mid-1700s, most of the tobacco warehouses moved further south to Alexandria’s Hunting Creek. The city became part of the newly formed District of Columbia in the late 1700s and later reverted back to the Commonwealth of Virginia.

During the modern era, North Old Town has sometimes lagged behind its southern counterpart when it comes to trendy shopping districts and new upscale condos for sale. That has been changing in recent years, however, with a number of high profile commercial developments. Among the most noteworthy has been the transformation of a sheet metal office workers building into the stunning modernist Oronoco Flats, listing as high as $4 million, with giant windows walls and every amenity imaginable.
The North Old Town area has a history of industrial use, and transforming those old structures has been one of the main keys to unlocking the immense potential of the waterfront. The Old Town Small Area Plan is an ongoing effort from the city with a proposed 2015-2017 window. Among the projects is Robinson Terminal North, representing one-half of the Robinson North and South Terminals—two port industrial sites that used to handle newsprint for the Washington Post. The long-vacant warehouses are now in the midst of redevelopment. The South portion will include town houses, condos and restaurants while the North Terminal will be a second mixed-use development, featuring a hotel.
The largest site in the area is the Potomac River Generating Station covering 25 acres of prime real estate. The plant shut down in 2012 and the current owners will be working with the Old Town North planning process in an effort to create new public amenities and waterfront development.
But while Old Town North continues looking forward, much of the heavy lifting has already been done with numerous townhouses and condos for sale, stemming both from historic buildings and brand-new construction. Also worth mentioning is the new Trader Joe’s and Harris Teeter grocery stores, the recently improved Montgomery Park and a continuing trend toward new bars and restaurants.
