More About the Mount Pleasant Neighborhood
Mount Pleasant is historic indeed, dating way back to a colonial land grant in 1727. That’s well before the founding of Washington, DC, and in fact, before the Revolutionary War!
Known as Pleasant Plains in the early days, the community remained farmland until the late 1800s when residential development began. Construction went full bore around the turn of the century, the result being detached single-family homes on large lots, Victorian row houses and the aforementioned apartment building and hotel conversions. By the mid-century, construction had tapered off, with some exceptions.
The greenspace adjacent to the community includes the Smithsonian National Zoo and Piney Creek Park. Those who enjoy tennis won’t have far to go—the Peirce Mill Tennis Center, Rock Creek Tennis Center, Arthur Ashe Children’s Program and the William H.G. Fitzgerald Tennis Center are all close by.
