McLean Gardens Condos For Sale
In the upper Northwest quadrant of Washington, DC is a condominium development so large that it is actually considered its own neighborhood. This is McLean Gardens with 720 condo units in 31 brick Colonial Revival style buildings. This historical community is home to around 1000 residents and is tucked right into the northern reaches of Glover Archbold Park, in the Glover Park neighborhood.
This development is one of Washington Metro’s largest examples of the garden apartment communities that sprang up in the region during the lead-up to World War II. Built in 1942, the 23-acre development was one of a number of federally sponsored efforts to provide housing for a rapidly expanding defense industry workforce.

Additional Info About McLean Gardens Condominium Residences
The history of the neighborhood goes back much further, however. The land was originally part of a 3000-acre grant to colonists in the late 1600s and is associated with nearby Friendship Heights. Over the ensuing years, the land was sold off to various farmers and developers. In 1898, John McLean—publisher of the Washington Post—purchased 75 acres and build a lavish Georgian Revival mansion and named it “Friendship.” The estate, complete with an 18-hole golf course and stables, would become a famed summer retreat.
McLean’s son Edward inherited the property. But Edward and his socialite wife Evalyn spent their considerable fortune in a grand Roaring Twenties style that was much chronicled back in the day. The government purchased the land after Edward’s death in 1941 and built the garden community as it is known today. In 1980, the huge apartment complex was the subject of a court battle by tenants who successfully brought suit to convert it to condominiums.
Condos for sale at McLean Gardens come in a variety of one and two bedroom floor plans, with duplexes, flats and lofts—some of which also have dens. Sizes generally range from 770 to 1000 square feet, with list prices in the $300s and $400s. The original floors were parquet hardwood, but many owners have opted for strip hardwood. Similarly, many of the kitchens have been further remodeled since the 1980 conversion.
There’s plenty of community amenities here, including a community swimming pool, tennis courts, tot lots, barbeque areas and the famed Ballroom at McLean Gardens—a historic special events facility with 40-foot ceilings, 20-foot windows, interior Greek columns, two fireplaces, five grand chandeliers and a beautiful oak dance floor. Suffice to say, McLean Gardens is not your ordinary condo complex.
