Kalorama Neighborhood Information
Kalorama, which translates to “beautiful view” in Greece, dates back to a huge estate with surrounding gardens built in the late 1700s. It was residentially subdivided and developed from the 1880s to around 1931. The area is known for its lovely Victorian and Beaux Arts row houses, as well as large single-family homes in the Mediterranean, Georgian Revival and Tudor traditions. There’s also a number of historic hotels and apartment buildings that have been restored, renovated and converted to condos for sale.
Among the surrounding neighborhoods are Columbia Heights to the north, Adams Morgan to the northeast, Dupont Circle to the south and Rock Creek Park as well as Massachusetts Avenue’s Embassy Row to the west.
The community has long been home to prominent political, business and cultural leaders. A small sampling includes Woodrow Wilson, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover. Among more recent residents is the post-White House Obama family, Ivanka and Jared Trump, and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos who dropped $23 million on the most expensive home in DC.
