In DC’s early days, trolley cars were first pulled by horses and later powered by cable cars—drawn by motorized cables enclosed beneath tracks. But in the very late 1800s, electric streetcars became the preferred technology. The car barn buildings were designed by Waddy Butler Wood for the Metropolitan Railroad Company in 1896, and served as storage houses for the streetcars, with administrative offices on the upper floors. In 1961, the buildings transitioned to bus storage units, and in 2005, were converted to upscale condos for sale.
As you might imagine, the restoration and renovations necessary to transform vehicle storage to luxury loft condos was intensive. But the end result was beautiful residences with open living spaces, bamboo floors, wood-burning fireplaces, huge arched windows, and modern gourmet kitchens that are open to the living areas with granite counters, maple cabinets and stainless steel appliances.
The look of the Car Barn II from the outside is that of a gothic, five-story fortress-like complex with turrets at certain corners, a number of different wings, landscaping and brick walkways that wind in and around the buildings, and lovely private patios. There is also a swimming pool, plus 30-foot iron gates surrounding the development for extra privacy.
The Car Barn II is in East Capitol Hill’s 20002 zip code, and near to Lincoln Park to the west and RFK Stadium to the east (now home to DC United Soccer). The Amory Metro Station is within walking distance, and there is also all the new restaurants and entertainment cropping up along the Anacostia River waterfront area.
