What is the Difference Between a Townhome and Townhouse?
The difference between a townhome and a townhouse can be a matter of semantics, given that both residences have two or more stories and are typically purchased as condominiums—the units are individually owned with joint ownership of common areas.
Still, townhomes often refer to larger and more luxurious versions of townhouses. For instance, a four-level townhouse dwelling with a private garage and rec room at the ground level, second-story living space plus a chef’s kitchen, multiple bedrooms on the third level and some sort of den, bar, or bonus space at the fourth level along with a rooftop terrace could definitely qualify as a townhome. Add extra points for an elevator!
That said, sometimes a townhome is simply a townhouse by a slightly different name.
More About Arlington Townhomes
Granted, the term “townhome” is a bit of a marketing device. But there is no denying that these upscale properties carry a lot of cache in the Arlington area, and throughout all of the Washington Metropolitan region for that matter.
The Rosslyn-Ballston Corridor was mentioned at the outset as a place where townhome living has become a legitimate status symbol. The Rosslyn neighborhood (by the Potomac River), the Courthouse community and its closely associated neighbor Clarendon, plus Virginia Square and Ballston all benefit greatly by their close proximity to top bars, restaurants, entertainment and retail.
Then again, there’s nothing wrong with a lovely townhome in a quiet and exclusive North Arlington gated community, close to parks and the Washington Golf and Country Club.
