This area dates back to 1839 and the Mount Hope plantation. The town was residentially platted as Cheverly Gardens in the early part of the 20th century. Early development was sporadic until real estate tycoon Robert Marshall had a road paved to the closest rail road station, circa 1918. Mail order kit homes accounted for a large portion of the first homes for sale.
The original 12-room antebellum Mount Hope plantation manor still stands today, serving as the town seal. The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
