Twinbrook, MD Homes For Sale

With only about 7,850 residents, the pleasant community of Temple Hills, Maryland offers some of the most affordable homes for sale in Washington Metro. This little suburb also has a great location—close to the DC borderline, with Andrews Air Force Base to the east and the town of Suitland to the north. How affordable are properties here? List prices start around $100,000 and rarely exceed $400,000. The bulk of the inventory resides in the lower registers of that range.

The town dates back to the mid-1800s when it was mostly farmland. Residential development occurred slowly over time, with a rise in construction starting in the 1950s. Notable residents have included William T. “Sonny” Randall—a well-known outfielder in the Negro Baseball League from the early 1930s to the late 1950s.

Twinbrook, MD single-family homes make up the lion’s share of homes for sale, ranging from Colonials, Cape Cods and Sears “Craftsman” catalogue homes to 1960s era Ramblers and Split-levels. There are also custom homes at extremely competitive prices, including brand-new four-bedroom Colonials in the Northham Acres subdivision that have been listing recently in the high $300s. Why on earth are Twinbrook homes so inexpensive? It’s all about the real estate crisis that affected Prince George’s County more than any other part of the region, starting around 2008. The market has been rebounding since about 2012 but prices are still well off their high mark. As for new custom construction, developers and contractors in this area are hungry for new business.

Condos for sale in Twinbrook account for a fairly small slice of all listings, but do exist—often represented by older townhouses and converted World War II-era garden apartment complexes. Again, prices are very low.

What else does the community have to offer? How about nice parks, public indoor and outdoor swimming pools, the Temple Hills Rec Center with tennis, basketball and arts programs, and the private Temple Hills Swim Club. There’s also the recently renovated and upgraded Marlow 6 Cinemas. As for commuter options, the Capital Beltway runs right through two and there’s also the Southern Avenue Metro.
With all this, it’s not at all surprising that homes and condos for sale have been jumping in value recently. Yes, Temple Hills is a mecca for bargain hunters. It won’t stay that way indefinitely, however—the inventory is already shrinking.
