Old Town Alexandria Properties for Sale

South Old Town Alexandria represents the largest portion of the historic center of the city. It is roughly bordered by PendletonStreet to the north, the Potomac River on the east, the Capital Beltway to the south and S. Washington Street to the west. That said, a portion of the community including both King Street and Duke Street, extends somewhat further west than that.

Old Town officially dates back to 1747 but early colonial tobacco plantations existed even before that. The Potomac River waterfront provided a convenient location for warehouses where the leafy crops would be inspected before being shipped off. While the earliest known loading dock was near Oronoco Bay, a larger number of warehouse operations soon moved south to Hunting Creek. Alexandria developed quickly from the mid-1700s on, becoming one of the nation’s busiest ports.
