Riverdale, MD Homes For Sale
Known for its historic homes for sale, the small town of Riverdale (also known as Riverdale Park) in Maryland is also going through a modest uptick in new housing starts in the form of upscale custom residences. That said, overall list prices are quite competitive. With a population of about 7,000 residents, this charming community is located in Prince George’s County, just north of Hyattsville.
Around 1800, Henri Joseph Stier, a Belgian aristocrat, began building a large Georgian mansion known as Riverdale on 800 acres of farmland between two forks of the Anacostia River. Stier and his wife soon returned to Europe, giving the estate to their daughter Rosalie and her husband, George Calvert—grandson of the fifth Lord Baltimore.
In the early 1900s, the Riverdale Park Company began purchasing land for residential expansion. Early homes for sale included Colonials and Victorians, and were joined by a number of original Sears Roebuck “Craftsman” catalog homes. Development continued slowly but steadily over time, with the 1960s era bringing an influx of Split-levels and brick Ramblers.
