Kent Real Estate, Washington DC

Real estate for sale in Kent is among the most expensive in all of Washington Metro. Located in the far northwestern reaches of DC, this secluded enclave lies just west of the Potomac River, with Maryland to the north, Spring Valley to the east and Palisades to the west. In fact, the neighborhood has often been thought to be part of Palisades. That, however, is simply not true—Kent has its own distinct and diverse history, even if most people have never heard of it.

Kent began as rural farmland, followed by summer homes for Washington’s elite. The site of the Battery Kemble Union fort during the Civil War, it later became a haven for freed slaves and other minorities banned from living in certain parts of the district. While you can still find a few farmhouse manors from the 1800s, the bulk of residential development occurred from the mid-1920s onward. There’s an interesting blend of architecture here—lots of center hall Colonials, but also Victorian, Craftsman, French Country and even some modernist designs.

Kent Neighborhood Information

When it comes to Kent real estate in Washington DC, there’s not much in the way of condos, although a few upscale row houses supposedly exist somewhere along the Palisades border. But that’s not why people move to Kent. Life here is about quiet tree-lined streets and spacious single-family residences with immaculately manicured lawns. As for the prices, homes for sale start in the high six figures and quickly escalate, topping out around $10 million. You’ll find financiers, ambassadors and other politically minded types living here, cherishing the relative anonymity of a high-priced neighborhood in the District’s outskirts.

Amenities & Attractions in Kent - Washington DC

There isn’t much retail in Kent apart from a small commercial area along MacArthur Boulevard that includes favorite local restaurants Et Voila! and Sur La Place. A few blocks south in Palisades are other popular eateries like Makoto and BlackSalt Fish Market & Restaurant. For the most part, however, it’s the simple joys that attract new residents to Kent—taking the dog for a walk in Battery Kemble Park, jogging along the Potomac and at day’s end, returning home to a multimillion dollar manor.
