More About Cleveland Park
Connecticut Avenue runs through the heart of Cleveland Park, while Wisconsin Avenue is at the neighborhood’s western border. Massachusetts Avenue lies just a bit further west. These three major north/south roadways are well-known for large historic structures. A stretch of Massachusetts Avenue is also commonly referred to as Embassy Row for its many diplomatic missions.
The Neighborhood’s Early History
The land that makes up Cleveland Park originated with a massive estate known as Pretty Prospects, owned by a colonist who built a one-room stone cottage prior to 1730. That cottage is widely considered the oldest standing home in DC. In 1793, Uriah Forest—a Revolutionary War general-turned-congressman—bought the estate and renamed it Rosedale. He subsequently built an adjacent farmhouse and then enclosed the area between the farmhouse and the stone cottage, forming one large residence known as the Rosedale Farmhouse.
Nearly a century later (1886), President Grover Cleveland built a summer home known as Red Top near the Rosedale Farmhouse. Wisconsin Avenue was constructed in 1890, followed by Connecticut Avenue which was built in 1892.
The Community Today
Residents of Cleveland Park enjoy plenty of nearby greenspace, surrounded on three sides by the Smithsonian National Zoological Park, Rock Creek Park and the Melvyn C Hazen Park. There’s also the restored AMC Lowes Uptown Theater (dating to 1936), and top restaurants like Ripple, Ardeo + Bardeo, Medium Rare and St. Arnold’s Mussel Bar, and a Yes! Organic Market.
