Carbery School Condos For Sale
410 5th Street NE, Washington D.C.
One of the best-known trends in Washington, DC real estate for a number of years, has been converting former schools into condos for sale. The reason is simple—a surplus of long-ago educational facilities, many of which fell into decay and abandonment.
But they can be turned into upscale luxury living quarters!
The Carbery School Condominium on Capitol Hill was one of the earliest adaptive reuse projects of surplus schools in DC. Originally built in 1887 by the Office of the Building Inspector, it remained in use as a school until 1949, at which point it was turned into a warehouse.

But in the 1980s, a developer named Robert Herrema purchased this historic structure and began the arduous process of converting it into 23 loft condos for sale. That process was completed in 1994, making it one of the first of a new breed of trendy loft living. Units at the Carbery School have received further facelifts since then.
This handsome three-story brick building has a recessed center pavilion, giant arched windows on the second floor, and symmetrical bays topped by pediments. Inside, restored hardwood floors, fireplaces, open kitchens, stainless steel appliances, double convection ovens, 12-foot ceilings, and an abundance of original detailing.
