Vienna
One of Fairfax County’s three official townships, Vienna dates back to 1740. It was the site of the Battle of Vienna during the Civil War and officially incorporated as a town in 1890. Another significant part of its history has a continuing role today, and it has to do with wolves!
As legend has it, tobacco farmers in this neck of the woods, dealt with wolf menaces as early as the 1630s—before Vienna even had a name. The area affected was named Wolf Trap Run and a prominent farm was dubbed Wolf Trap Farm. The General Assembly offered rewards to those who constructed pits or traps to capture and deliver wolf heads to the assembly.
In 1930, Catherine Filene Shouse, a wealthy patron of the arts, purchased the farm and worked the land for a number of years. She eventually donated it to the U.S. Government as the first and only national park dedicated to the performing arts, Today, the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts is home to numerous concerts and events each year.
