Shirlington & Fairlington, VA Homes For Sale
Homes for sale in the neighborhoods of Shirlington and Fairlington in Virginia, owe their history to a very specific period of time. Specifically, the World War II era. Why are these two Arlington communities paired-up here? Because they are next-door neighbors and there is a commonality of real estate properties.
Shirlington gets its name from a combination of Shirley Highway (I-395) and Arlington. Its development largely revolved around the construction of the Shirlington Shopping Center in 1944. The mall was redeveloped during the 1980s and renamed the Village at Shirlington. Today, the community continues to evolve into a vibrant Arlington’s Arts and Entertainment Village featuring new mixed-use development, which naturally means that there will soon be more condos for sale.
Meanwhile, Fairlington was home to the largest housing project financed by the Defense Homes Corporation during World War II. The garden-style apartment community that is similar in style to other courtyard complexes throughout Washington Metro, now provides a large inventory of townhouse condos for sale—those old brick buildings being highly suited for condo conversion. More About the Shirlington & Fairlington Real Estate Market
Condos for sale in Shirlington and Fairlington typically start around $250,000 and top out around $600,000. That’s a pretty narrow band, and has to do with the commonality of housing stock. You won’t find a lot of detached single-family homes for sale in either of these communities. However, new construction in Shirlington will provide some variety, with lofts and one-bedroom units.
It seems somewhat ironic that communities so tied to the 1940s are now being branded as new hipster urbanism. But redevelopment brings to opportunity to recreate and Shirlington is moving ahead full-speed. You’ll find plenty of fun activities here, with stage performances at the Signature Theater, movies at AMC Lowe’s Shirlington 7, and drinks and dining at a number of popular clubs and eateries. There is also the annual Shirlington Oktoberfest which means a plethora of craft beers to sample!
While most homes and condos for sale in Shirlington and Fairlington have a stylistic sameness, the evolution of an old post-industrial age shopping center offers obvious re-branding opportunities. The competitive real estate prices don’t hurt either!
