Mount Rainier, MD Homes For Sale

As one of four communities making up the Gateway Arts District along Maryland’s Route 1 Corridor, Mount Rainer offers a fun and funky vibe, and wonderful Sears Roebuck “Craftsman” homes for sale, as well as early Montgomery Ward and Aladdin kit homes. Got your attention now? The prices are also highly appealing—primarily in the lower six-figure range. However, the inventory isn’t as large as it was a few years ago.

The arrival of a streetcar line from Washington, DC, helped push Mt. Rainer’s early growth. It incorporated as a town in 1910 and as a city in 1945. There’s not much of an urban feel, however—it’s home to only about 8.000 residents and covers less than a square mile.

The number of catalogue kit homes here is unusually high.  From 1908 to 1940, customers could browse the Sears Modern Homes catalogue, choose from many different styles and mail in their order. Parts would ship by rail, and then be trucked to property lots. And then the hammers would start swinging! Among designs found here are the Winona porch-front cottage, the Conway with five rooms, the two-story Vallonia and the roomy Windsor (described in the catalog as being for “better-class workers”). More About the Mount Rainier Real Estate Market

Mount Rainier condos for sale here are primarily artists’ lofts—those being an integral part of the Gateway Arts Initiative that has spurred revitalization efforts. There may soon be more condos for sale, as plans move forward for a mixed-use town center to further stimulate economic activity.

The low list prices for Mount Rainier homes for sale have much to do with the real estate downturn that hit Prince George’s County hard, beginning around 2008. While prices have spiked since 2012, they are still quite affordable, starting in the $100s and generally topping out at less than $400,000. But in such a small community, the pool of awesome Craftsman homes for sale is rapidly shrinking.
With fun cafes, coffee shops, yoga studios, galleries and plans for expanded retail, this is a highly interesting tiny city.
