Langley Park, MD Homes For Sale
Some of the most affordable homes for sale in the Washington metropolitan area can be found in Maryland, and Langley Park is a perfect example. List prices in this densely populated suburb generally start around $100,000, and can sometimes be found for even less. The upper end of the scale is equally modest—prices rarely rise past $350,000. That will change to some degree, with values currently on the rise.
Langley Park is named after a 540-acre estate that featured an opulent Georgian Revival mansion, built in 1924. How big was this home? Try 28 rooms! But the land wound up being subdivided for residential expansion and affordable housing in 1949. The trend continued for quite some time—goodbye country estate, hello low-rise apartments, duplexes and modest single-family homes. More About the Langley Park Real Estate Market
You won’t find expensive custom homes for sale in Langley Park. What you will find are competitively priced Colonials, Ramblers, Split-levels and assorted shoebox cottages. There are also a fair number of condos for sale—most often in squat low-rise buildings from the 1950s and 60s, or garden style apartment complexes that have converted to condominiums.
The reason for such low prices is two-fold—the somewhat modest nature of the homes for sale themselves, and the fact that Prince George’s County is still recovering from the real estate downturn of that began around 2007. As a result, you can still find a number of short sales and foreclosures.
Although Langley Park is a pleasant community with an appealing greenbelt, it also has one of the widestand busiest intersections in Washington Metro, with University Blvd and New Hampshire Ave coming together in a messy collection of transit stops and shopping plazas. While retail opportunities abound, it has been called the most dangerous intersection in Maryland for foot traffic. The county has plans for a centralized mass transit stop for the crossroads.
But apart from rushing traffic, there is also lots of shopping plus an “International Corridor” of global cuisines. All-in-all, this is a community with a lot to offer, including homes for sale at bargain rates.
