Up in northwest Washington, DC, tucked into Rock Creek Park and surrounded by other posh enclaves is Forest Hills. Home to numerous foreign embassies, the community is also known for its palatial homes for sale. And, peaceful green spaces, elite dinner fundraisers, political appointees and World Bank executives—just that typical kind of DC suburban vibe, that’s all.
Don’t despair if you’re not ultra-wealthy though. When it comes to Forest Hills real estate for sale, there are also a number of condos for sale in the neighborhood which is welcome news for the underpaid faculty members of nearby colleges, or support staffers at the various embassies—just as long as they don’t show up invited at the black tie lawn parties hosted at the really big mansions.

Set within a wooded rolling landscape, Forest Hills was first home to the Pascataway Indian tribe and was later the setting for Civil War encampments. Mills and country estates gave way to residential development in the early 1900s and the intervening years have provided a smorgasbord of architectural delights. Homes for sale include stately gated Colonials, along with the requisite Victorians, Capes, Tudors, American Craftsman and even Mediterranean, but you’ll also find some push-the-boundaries modern styles.
Wait, back up a moment. What about modern styles? Here in the land of ambassadors and other Washington aristocracy? Yes indeed—the presence of Rock Creek Park inspired some adventurous souls to commission unique modern and contemporary homes, hidden among the trees and sometimes even hanging off cliffs. Renowned architect Travis kicked things off with several angular offerings and other modern designers such as Richard Neutra have followed suit.
While Rock Creek Park runs along the entire eastern border of the neighborhood, other high end suburbs surround it on the other sides. Those include Chevy Chase to the northwest, North Cleveland Park to the west and Cleveland Park to the south.
Forest Hills condos for sale, both in old apartment buildings conversions and International-style complexes from the 1960s era, generally kick off the bidding at around $225,000 with prices escalating into the mid-six figure range. Detached single-family homes for sale start at around a million dollars and climb from there. The cultural diversity of the neighborhood is driven by numerous embassies, including Italy, the Czech Republic, Israel, Austria, the Netherlands, Peru and others.
It is also worth noting the number of great schools in the neighborhood, including Murch Elementary, Deal Middle School and Woodrow Wilson High. Private schools include Rock Street Academy and Edmund Burke School. You can also find the Howard University of Law here.
