More About the Woodmore Community
Woodmore has a lengthy history, dating all the way back to a colonist named Thomas Spriggs who acquired a 500-acre land grant of forested terrain in 1698. The first home in the area was built a full century later. It wasn’t until the 1920s, however, that residential development began to blossom, primarily with estates and summer country homes.
The modern era brought a new level of development, as land was parceled off for planned communities such as Woodmore Meadows, Woodmore Estates and Woodmore South. The Country Club at Woodmore played a major role in the community’s evolvement—first built in 1923 as the Beaver Dam Golf and Country Club. The course was bought and renamed in 1941 as Prince George’s Country Club and was redesigned again in 2007 into its present status as the Country Club at Woodmore.
The City of Bowie Continues to Evolve
Bowie in Prince George's County has seen a lot of changes over the years. During the mid-1800s it was a farming community and it further grew with the arrival of the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad in 1853. In 1908, the first electric trolley came to town. The area has long been known for thoroughbred horse farms and breeding, and in 1914, the Bowie Race Track was completed. The track was successful for many years, enjoying its heyday in the 1950s and 1960s. The track closed to the public in 1985 but is still used as a training center.
Modern day Bowie is a city of some 55,000 residents with bars, restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, shops, malls, movies and other entertainment. The Six Flags America amusement park began life as a wildlife preserve in the 1970s. Today, it is the largest theme park in the DC/Maryland region. Also popular is the Bowie Town Center with shops, restaurants and more. To learn more about luxury homes for sale in Woodmore, call District Partners at Compass at (202) 798-3600.
