The land that makes up Westover was originally part of the Highland Park neighborhood (now commonly referred to as Highland Park-Overlee Knolls). In fact, there are still a few homes dating back to the early 1900s that were built as part of HP. But around 1938, Miles Mace of Mace Properties financed a new subdivision. A flurry of construction activity began, with the majority of properties constructed in just four years.

That same busy period also saw the completion of the Walter Reed Elementary School on McKinley Road in 1938, and the Claude A. Swanson Middle School in 1940. The latter is now referenced on Arlington’s Register of Historic Places as the oldest public junior high school in all of Virginia.

Also notable was the opening of the Westover Shopping Center on Washington Boulevard in 1940. The strip of local businesses still thrives today, featuring places like Westover Market, Ayer’s Variety and Hardware, Toby’s Homemade Ice Cream and Coffee, and the Lost Dog Café.

All this may seem like a lot for a smallish neighborhood but there’s still more to enjoy in Westover Village, including a great farmers market, Westover Park, Westover Library, the northern tip of Bon Air Park and historic landmarks like the last remaining portion of the 19th century Torreyson Dairy Farm.

Other surrounding neighborhoods include Tara-Leeway Heights, Bon Air, Lacey Forest, Dominion Hills and Madison Manor.

Construction didn’t completely halt after the initial boom. New homes continued to pop up here and there over the ensuing years. There have also been some recent luxury townhouses built, including Arlington Row. But it’s still the original properties that are most prevalent, with Colonial Revivals, Craftsman, some Cape Cods and mid-century contemporary designs. Mace also built the Westover Apartments in 1939, a garden-style project with a 153 residences, as well as the Westover Hills subdivision in 1940, featuring single-family houses, duplexes and apartments.

Homes for sale in Westover typically range from around $600,000 to over a million dollars. This suburban community with a subtle streak of urban sensibility is one of the county’s fascinating time capsules—a walk-friendly community with indie businesses, attractive homes and civic pride.
