Waldorf, MD Homes For Sale
A large, spread-out community measuring 36.5 square miles, Waldorf offers a rich history and lovely homes for sale at extremely competitive prices. Located in Maryland’s Charles County, this pleasant suburb with its gently rolling hills was tempting territory for developers who built a whole lot of upscale homes in very recent years. The problem is that they did it in the middle of a real estate downturn. The result was plunging prices in an otherwise affluent setting.
Like so much of Washington Metro, Waldorf’s roots lie in the tobacco trade. It was known as Beantown throughout the 1700s and up to 1880. While large in geographic size, it was small in population until the 1950s when gambling was legalized in Maryland. The area long US 301 became known as “Little Vegas”, with casinos, nightlife and top performers. Waldorf was one of the top locations along “Sin Strip” but in 1968, gambling was outlawed. Without the revenue from all those slots, the boom era subsided. In 1970, however, the Department of Housing and Urban Development funded a huge loan package, kicking off a new era of expansion. The first step was the construction of the large St. Charles master-planned community. Today, Waldorf, Maryland is home to around 68,000 residents. The expansion continues, with new schools, shopping centers, restaurants and plans for a new mixed-use town center. To learn more about Waldorf, MD homes for sale, call us today!
