Abdo Developers keyed on preserving the exterior of the lovely 1920s brownstone building with its classic flat roof and cornice, while completely transforming the interior. The Willison had already gone condo some years prior. But Abdo took 72 units and gutted them, winding up with anywhere from one to three extra large residences on each floor, ranging in size from 1,500 to 1,900 square feet.

Logan Circle from Then to Now

This vibrant urban community was once rural land, populated lightly by a farm here and there. During the Civil War it was home to Camp Barker, a refugee location for freed African-American slaves. The aftermath of that war saw the first real push toward residential development, and that construction boom expanded through the late 1800s and carried over into the early 1900s, gradually slowing down by the 1930s.

But development in Logan Circle (once known as Iowa Circle) didn’t come to a complete standstill during the early 20th century. The post-World War II years saw a movement toward redeveloping older buildings in favor of mid-century apartment buildings, while the modern era has seen the creation of the Logan Circle Historic District and the 14th Street Historic District, areas that promoted the protection of original structures from the early years.

Redevelopment in Logan Circle now often means adaptive reuse projects—turning a building from a commercial purpose into residences through renovation, restoration and sometimes, expansion. The Willison is a good example of the historical renovation process, wherein the exterior of a structure remains while the interior is made over. Logan Circle is also home to “Auto Row,” a one-block area along Church Street where former car body and showrooms built from the 1940s to 1970s have now been transformed into high-end industrial-style lofts and flats. Examples include Lofts 14, Matrix, Rainbow Lofts and The Metro.

The Willison FAQ’s

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is The Willison a new building or an old building?

A: Originally built in the 1920s, The Willison was substantially renovated by Abdo Development in 2002. There were originally around 72 units, but the developers chose to reduce that number to just 23 residences spread out over eight stories.

Q: How far would I have to travel from The Willison in order to find a supermarket or large grocery store?

A: Whole Foods Market on P Street is just steps from The Willison. Additionally, there is a Giant Food a few blocks east.

Q: Are there any nearby restaurants?

A: Again, you won’t have to go far to find a good sit-down meal. Logan Circle’s famed 14th Street restaurant row is right at the end of the block. In addition, there are countless great bars, coffee shops, and restaurants in next-door Dupont Circle, as well as downtown Washington to the south.

Q: Is The Willison a pet-friendly building?

A: It certainly is. And you’ll be glad to know that there are some great places to take your dog for off-leash play, including the nearby S Street Park as well as the Shaw Dog Park.

Getting Around Logan Circle

One thing Logan Circle does not have is its very own dedicated Metrorail station. But it’s not that much of an inconvenience—the Dupont Circle Metro Station with Red Line service and the U Street/African-American Civil War/Cardoza Metro Station with Green and Yellow Lines are each reasonably close. Also, the Willison has a parking garage which is somewhat of a luxury in DC. That means you can wheel your motorized beast of the garage and head out along one of the major avenues that connects with the traffic circle itself, or any one of the nearby north-south and west-east streets.

But this is also a highly walkable neighborhood with a Walk Score of 96 and a Bike Score of 95, making it one of the District’s Top 5 most walkable places. Add electric scooters, skateboards and ride sharing services and there’s plenty of ways to get around locally. So regardless of how to choose to get to where you’re going, Logan Circle is a centrally located place that’s close to all the action. Each condo at The Willison is either a one-bedroom plus den or a two-bedroom. All units have two full baths and open designs with lots of natural light. The reconfiguration of floor plans also resulted in unusually elongated living spaces.

Wide-plank hardwood flooring with honey tones adds to the ambience. There are also remote control gas fireplaces in every residence, “smart wiring” throughout, video entry and beautiful marble and limestone spa baths with seamless glass showers. The open kitchens add a nice touch of warmth, with custom 42-inch Maple cabinets, granite counters and stainless steel appliances. Many of the upper-level units also have private balconies.

The pet-friendly Willison has an elegant marble lobby, garage parking and secure extra storage. But the location is an even bigger selling point. The popular Fresh Fields gourmet grocery store is right behind the building, while Whole Foods is less than half-a-block away. Also close by is Flow Yoga, Vida Fitness and Studio Theatre.

And then there’s DC’s famous 14th Street restaurant row, with top bars and restaurants within easy strolling distance. Enjoy Church Key, Slipstream, the pig, Black Whiskey, Tortilla Coast and so much more. Plus, the building’s south Logan Circle locale allows residents to walk to the downtown area. Condos for sale at The Willison are typically priced between $715,000 and $1,250,000—when you can find an active listing, that is.
