Located in the heart of Rosslyn is a luxury boutique condominium known as The Weslie. In truth, it’s not that striking from the outside—a boxy, greyish brick affair with a utilitarian vibe. But the residences inside are quite remarkable with two-to-three levels of living space, soaring ceilings and balconies with spectacular views of the nearby Potomac River.

The Evolving Rosslyn Waterfront

Rosslyn is a centuries old waterfront community in Arlington that has seen almost continuous change. The latest and current evolvement follows a long period of study and neighborhood participation that puts more emphasis on residential and visitor-friendly development and less on the neighborhood’s status as a place for office towers and corporate business.

It’s the latest chapter in Rosslyn’s history. Once known as a ferry landing enabling farmers to bring their crops to market in Georgetown, the neighborhood later became known for its gambling halls and houses of ill repute. A cleanup campaign in the early 1900s led to residential development followed by a period of industrial and commercial use. The 1960s and 1970s brought a rash of high-rises, including a number of prominent office towers. More recently, luxury condominiums have established their own foothold in a transit oriented urban community that serves as the easternmost bookend of the Rosslyn-Ballston Corridor. The corridor is comprised of five trendy urban neighborhoods—Rosslyn, Court House, Clarendon, Virginia Square and Ballston—each with its own Metro station. The number of top bars and restaurants along the corridor is staggering.

But if Rosslyn is already known as one of Arlington’s hottest real estate marketplaces with high-end condos and townhouses for sale, the winds of change are once again blowing. The Rosslyn Sector Plan is a comprehensive effort that was put into place in 2015, after two years of community input under the grassroots Realize Rosslyn label. This integrated community and county effort establishes Rosslyn as a redevelopment district with a vision of turning the economic hub into a more walk-friendly, live-work-play destination place while continuing to nurture the longstanding reputation of Rosslyn’s Gateway to Arlington status.

Look for even more luxury condos, waterfront attractions, new hotels, more shops, restaurants and other walkable features, including an entire city block of redevelopment which will be known as the Rosslyn Gateway project. One of the centerpieces will be a remaking of Gateway Park.
