The Tewkesbury Condos For Sale, Washington DC
Brightwood, a neighborhood in the northern reaches of Washington, DC, has seen its real estate values trend sharply upward in recent years. It still remains one of the final frontiers for quasi-affordable homes and condos for sale, although there are fewer bargains these days.
The Tewkesbury has been one of those cost-conscious opportunities—a 26-unit condominium with half of its residences designated as affordable housing. This 1950s former apartment building stood vacant for more than 20 years, and was cited for more than 100 code violations during that period. The District eventually purchased the property for $3 million, and solicited development proposals.
Blue Skye Construction and PGN Architects were awarded the contract and began construction in 2009. The team also reached out through 15 community meetings, donating $25,000 for Brightwood neighborhood improvements, and pledging to build 54 single-room occupancy units for seniors at a separate property.

The Tewkesbury took 14 months to complete and opened in the summer of 2010. One and two bedroom condos for sale typically list from the mid $200s to low $300s for market rate units. The low-rise white brick building has wide windows in that 1950s contemporary style, with the residences featuring open design, hardwood floors and kitchens with granite counters and stainless steel appliances. Most units also have balconies. There is even an 800 square-foot community room!
Located at 6425 14th Street NW in the city’s 20012 zip code, The Tewkesbury is just a block from the Rock Creek Golf Course and Rock Creek Park. Local bars and eateries include Haydee’s Restaurant, China Taste, Simple Bar & Grill, and Macombo Lounge. There’s also Culture Coffee—a favorite community hangout spot with art showings and open mic poetry nights.
Located not far from the Maryland border, Brightwood is in a transitional phase, with longtime locals welcoming progress, but at the same time, not wanting to give in to over-commercialization. The restoration of The Tewkesbury, which had been a neighborhood eyesore for too long, is another example of steps in the right direction—plus affordable condos for sale!
