The Residences at Terrell Place
One of Washington, DC’s notably ambitious commercial and residential developments was completed in 2004 and combines multiple structures—both historic and contemporary—as well as paying homage to a civil rights pioneer from the past. Terrell Place is a mixed-use project in Penn Quarter that includes a 10-story tower known as Residences at Terrell Place, with 29 luxury condos.
Developed by SmithGroup JJR, the project began with an 1850’s apartment building that had suffered considerable water damage, and the adjacent Hecht’s department store which was built in 1924. Melding with these structures is a new, narrow and ultra-modern glass and steel tower that seems to climb up the side of the other structures. The name of the complex was inspired by Mary Church Terrell, a noted civil rights activist who wasn’t able to get a cup of coffee at Hecht’s lunch counter due to early segregation laws. The construction work was done by the Clark Residential division of Clark Construction Group.
