Logan Circle Through the Ages

When Washington, DC was in its infancy, the area now known as Logan Circle was rural and largely uninhabited. The very first map of the District, drawn in 1791, showed the planning of the city as girds of north-south and east-west streets, with wider diagonal avenues that intersected with geometric shapes. Those shapes were intended to be parks and other public gathering places.

Although not named at the time, the Logan Circle area had a triangular shape as its public space. Decades later the area would become a circle, intersected by Rhode Island and Vermont Avenues. The round grassy space was first named Iowa Circle and would eventually be renamed Logan Circle. Despite the original planned streets and property lots, residential development didn’t really start booming until the post-Civil War era. Federal-style row houses started popping up around 1870, with a larger wave of development from the late 1800s through the early 1900s. Row houses, larger single-family homes and apartment buildings during that period reflected a rich diversity of architecture including various Victorian subsets, Second Empire, Gothic, Romanesque and Neo-classical. Art Deco forms began showing up around the 1930s, followed by the International style and eventually, contemporary forms.

The Metro and other buildings along Church Street are part of the neighborhood’s “Auto Row,” a stretch of former auto repair and showroom facilities that cropped up from the late 1940s to mid-1970s. This particular part of Logan Circle favors trendy industrial-chic condos like Lofts 14, the Matrix, Logan Station and Q14. There are also some interesting alleyway condos as well as former churches and even former schoolhouses!

Getting Around the Neighborhood

While Logan Circle does not have a dedicated Metro station, there are others within walking distance, including Shaw-Howard University, U Street and Dupont Circle. Also, residents at The Metro have parking garage options and Logan Circle is indeed quite drivable. After all, the epicenter is a traffic circle with major avenues radiating outward!

But this is also one of the most walkable neighborhoods in the entire city, and that counts for a lot. The Logan Circle Walk Score is an incredible 96 and the bike score is just a tick lower at 95. The number of bars and restaurants alone that are immediately close is just ridiculous: Estadio, Le Diplomate, Commissary, Birch & Barley, ChurchKey, The Pig, JINYA Ramen Bar, Pappe, Radiator, Etto, Logan Tavern and Drafting Table are just an example. Check first before making plans as DC eateries can either last for eons or come and go in the blink of an eye.
