More About the Adams Morgan Community

Adams Morgan is one of the oldest parts of Washington. But, its current name and boundaries are fairly recent. It was once home to the Nacotchtank Native American tribe. That began to change when two English colonists were granted large parcels of land in what was then considered part of Maryland. After the District was formed in 1791, the area was further subdivided into a number of estates. For more than a century, what is now Adams Morgan was considered part of surrounding communities like the Kalorama Triangle and Lanier Heights. During this period, the neighborhood was often referred to as Columbia and 18th Street.

The late 1800s brought a lot more platting as row houses, apartment buildings and hotels were built, establishing an overall appearance that continues to this day. During the 1950s, the principals of the all-white John Quincy Adams School and all-black Thomas P. Morgan School banded together to improve the lives of their students and the community as well, which now took on the name of Adams-Morgan.

The aftermath of civil unrest in the late 1960s and early 1970s led to a period of urban decline throughout Washington’s inner-city neighborhoods. But Adams Morgan, soon to be known as a mecca for live music and dance clubs, wound up leading the charge once again. The following decades brought waves of eager new real estate shoppers (as well as opportunistic investors) who took advantage of bargain basement prices for historic properties in need of some TLC.

These days, the brightly colored row houses in Adams Morgan are emblematic of the city’s revitalization. And while the music may not blast quite as loud as it did in the go-go ‘80s, there is still lots of revelry and pub-crawling in this multicultural mecca.
