With its classic Beaux-Arts structure, the Albemarle is a landmark building that stands out even amongst its peers. Located in the northern part of Dupont Circle near neighboring Kalorama, the seven story treasure was designed by Thomas Franklin Schneider, with memorable limestone detailing including pediments and pilasters, along with projecting cornicework along the flat roofline. Completed in 1901, the seven-story structure was a grand apartment rental building for many decades before being converted to condos in 1978. It is featured in James Goode’s celebrated coffee table book, “Best Addresses,” chronicling a century of Washington’s finest apartment buildings.

There are 54 condominium residences at the Albemarle with floorplans ranging from one to two bedrooms and from roughly 620 to over 1,500 square feet of elegant living space. The pet-friendly building is at the corner of 17th Street and T Street, surrounded by leafy vegetation but also conveniently close to numerous top restaurants. The Albemarle tends to present older from the street than it does inside, thanks to numerous renovations and makeovers during its century-plus history. While the stoney façade with its classical details invokes Old World charm, the interiors can be quite contemporary. There’s a large and traditional lobby, along with hanging chandeliers, and the condos themselves run the gamut of style. Some still have vintage hardwood floors, original built-ins, fun pocket doors, and even wood-burning fireplaces. However, you’re just as apt to find gourmet kitchens with stone counters and stainless steel appliances, luxurious baths, new flooring, and walls that have been altered or even removed in order to create open space living areas. The pet-friendly building with its welcoming front lobby sits right across from the small T Street Park and is one block from the fenced S Street Dog Park. The Albemarle was built well before the first car dealership in DC and does not have its own garage. However, there is on-street parking as well as the option for assigned spaces at the adjacent Concorde building. Some units even have deeded spaces at the Concorde. Additionally, there is a bus stop a block away and the Dupont Circle Metro Station is about six blocks away. Dupont Circle is a foodie haven and there’s a panoply of nearby bars, bakeries, and restaurants including ThreeFifty Bakery and Coffee, Bar Charley, Lyle’s, Lauriol Plaza, Floriana, and many more.
