Spring Valley Real Estate, Washington DC
Spring Valley has a hidden surprise for you—we’ll get to that shortly. This highly affluent suburb is located in upper northwest Washington, DC, abutting the Maryland border. Plus, it is known for some of the priciest homes for sale in Washington DC—starting around a million dollars and climbing from there. Condos for sale supposedly do actually exist but nobody’s actually ever seen one. That’s not the hidden surprise, though.
While the community dates all the way back to the 1600s, it remained farmland until the early 1900s when the military turned it into a munitions and chemicals testing site known as the American University Experiment Station. After the end of World War I, developers bought the land and planned a lovely neighborhood with luxury homes for sale along curving streets that adapted to the gently rolling terrain.

Spring Valley (Washington DC) Neighborhood Information
So here comes the surprise part. The idea that these handsome new 1920s homes for sale might be parked on top of unexploded bombs and nasty chemicals was conveniently left out of the discussion. It just never really came up—life proceeded just fine in this quiet neighborhood where wealthy politicians and business people lived.
But starting in 1993, the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers began an ongoing search for things that should not be lurking under the soil in nice upscale neighborhoods. It doesn’t seem to be bothering anyone all that much except that there may be less croquet played lately. And seriously, there’s absolutely no truth to the rumor that gardeners have been asked to poke long sticks in the ground when nobody’s home.
On the more innocuous end of neighborhood information, surrounding communities include Palisades to the south and American University Park to the north. Not to worry, no hidden bombs in those places.

Past presidents like Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon and George H.W. Bush have all lived in Spring Valley at one time or another and former Attorney General Eric Holder is currently a resident. And if those guys didn’t worry about potential pesky metal things under the lawn then why should you? Also worth mentioning is the delightful Wagshal’s Market and Delicatessen, offering quality food since 1925.
